Strait of Hormuz Remains Closed as Iran Reverses Opening After Lebanon Strikes

Iran re-closed the Strait of Hormuz hours after the ceasefire announcement, citing Israeli attacks on Lebanon as a violation of the truce. The reversal upended a central element of the deal: the "complete, immediate and safe opening" of the waterway through which one-fifth of global oil transits. The UK called for toll-free passage through Hormuz and demanded Lebanon be included in any ceasefire framework. Bloomberg reported that the US is pressing European allies to commit to securing navigation in the strait within days. Oil prices, which had plunged 16% on initial ceasefire news, rebounded partially on the re-closure.
The re-closure effectively nullified the ceasefire's primary deliverable for global markets. With oil prices still 40%+ above pre-war levels despite the initial ceasefire-driven plunge, the economic pressure on both sides is asymmetric: the US and allies need Hormuz open for energy stability, while Iran uses closure as its most effective non-kinetic escalation tool.
