KMT Chairwoman Arrives in China for First Opposition Leader Visit in a Decade

Taiwan's KMT chairwoman Cheng Li-wun arrived in China for a six-day "Journey of Peace," the first visit of a sitting KMT leader to the mainland in nearly a decade. Invited by CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping, the delegation will visit Shanghai, Nanjing, and Beijing, where Cheng may meet Xi directly. Cheng stated the visit aims to "show the world that it is not just Taiwan that unilaterally hopes for peace." The trip occurs against the backdrop of intensifying PLA military posturing across the Taiwan Strait and growing US strategic distraction in the Middle East.
The visit's timing, while Washington is consumed by the Iran crisis, allows Beijing to advance cross-strait engagement with reduced US diplomatic bandwidth to respond. The last sitting KMT leader's visit to China was nearly a decade ago; Xi's personal invitation signals Beijing sees a window to revive the 1992 Consensus framework with the opposition while the DPP holds the presidency. Whether Cheng secures a Xi meeting will indicate how far Beijing is willing to elevate the engagement.
